What is the distinction between fashion and style? It can be difficult to distinguish because the phrases are frequently used interchangeably, but there are a few key differences.

What Exactly Is Style?

Style refers to a person’s unique manner of expressing oneself, whether via dress, literary style, or architectural style. In the fashion sector, “style” is typically shorthand for “personal style,” or how a person expresses themselves via aesthetic decisions such as clothes, accessories, hairdo, and how they put an ensemble together.

What Exactly Is Fashion?

At every given period, fashion is the prevalent style within a certain society. Fashion is concerned with new trends: it relates to popular styles of dressed within a certain era.

The fashion business is concerned with current fashion trends. Fashion shows are put on by fashion houses to display attire that communicates a vision for the future of fashion. Fashion bloggers, editors, and influencers then react to that vision with their own ideas, and merchants utilize all of that data to sell garments to the public. The way the current trends are shared, whether through social media or fashion periodicals like Vogue, is an important aspect of fashion.

What Is the Distinction Between Fashion and Style?

There is some overlap between style and fashion, but a reasonable rule of thumb is that style is more personal, whilst fashion is more communal. Let us examine the distinctions:

  • Individual vs. collective: Personal style is something that belongs to an individual — it is a way of expressing oneself. That person might be a fashion designer (such as Coco Chanel or Yves Saint Laurent) or someone from outside the fashion business. Their style is defined by how they dress and express themselves. Fashion, on the other hand, is concerned with worldwide trends and the fashion business. The distinction between fashion and style is becoming increasingly hazy. A model is a part of the fashion world when she walks the runway. The way people dress at home, on the other hand, is a reflection of their unique style. When they gain prominence and their own style becomes legendary, they may launch their own clothing line, transforming their style into fashion.
  • Style vs. fashion: Style is timeless, whilst fashion is current. Someone who is trendy, keeps up with the newest fashion trends and dresses in luxury apparel. A fashionable person may or may not follow fashion trends, but they always remain loyal to their personal style. Rather than merely absorbing trends, personal style is about establishing a feeling of self.

Street style, which is captured by photographers outside of fashion events, combines fashion with style. Models, stylists, and fashion editors are generally photographed wearing the outfits of the designers whose shows they are attending, but they have styled the outfits to work for real life, thus fusing fashion and style.
